  • No Pressure for Senior Year

    September 19, 2008

    No Pressure for Senior Year

The "High School Musical" gang says they aren't feeling any pressure to succeed in "High School Musical 3: Senior Year," the latest installment of Disney's mega-hit franchise. In fact, they're looking forward to continuing the series which moves from television to the big screen this fall.

The latest sequel has the same accessibility as the first two movies. "The characters you see are a little over-the-top and stuff, [but] they're people that go to high school," Vanessa Hudgens said at a recent press conference. The difference between HSM 3 compared to HSM 1 and 2 is that "Senior Year" addresses adult love and angst, whereas the first two movies focused on adolescent crushes.

So what's new for Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay, and the rest of the senior class? "We're kind of deciding for ourselves what we should do with our futures," Zac Efron said. "There are a lot more decisions to make."

One decision Disney has to make is whether to go on to "High School Musical 4." Since Zac told MTV News that he doubted the old gang would return, the baton will probably be handed to Justin Martin and the rest of the new cast members. Director Kenny Ortega asserted that getting cast in HSM is no different than making a varsity team. "Our cast was very generous in welcoming them...and making them feel a part of the experience."

"I think it's nerve-racking for anyone coming to a cast that's already been established for the past three years," Corbin Bleu added. "But I think that they stepped up and came ready to work, and I think that we've accepted them as much as we've accepted each other."

Justin Martin Joins High School Musical 3: Senior Year

Justin Martin was one of three new actors cast in "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" following an international search for new Wildcats. He joins Matt Prokop and Jemma McKenzie-Brown as sophomores taking the musical baton from seniors Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu and Monique Coleman, in the latest installment of the hit Disney franchise. Kenny Ortega, who helmed the first two "High School Musical" films for the Disney Channel, will once again direct, in addition to adding new duties as executive producer.

"Peter Barsocchini's exciting script for 'High School Musical 3' called for the addition of three sophomore characters," Ortega commented in a press release. "So we set out on a massive casting search to find just the right young actors to play the parts. We think these talented performers will bring lots of humor, new twists, and musical fun to the film...Justin had a great presence and charisma, besides being a wonderful comedic actor who could really dance. I am confident that the three new actors joining our original cast will help to bring great musical thrills, surprises and a lot of fun to Senior Year and the halls of East High."

The film stars Denzel Washington, and I took a picture with him at the premiere's after-party. He was a great guy that was respected by everyone. After we took the picture, he said to me, 'maybe we might do a project together one day,' and  that is probably the best thing I've heard in my life.

Access Atlanta: “Peach Buzz”ing About Justin

Justin Martin has come a long way since his theatrical debut at his Decatur church. He is headed for the big screen in October and poised to become the next star out of Atlanta!

At just 14, he has earned critical praise for his role in "Raisin in the Sun," starring alongside P. Diddy. Previously, he portrayed Young Simba on Broadway in the "The Lion King."

As the newest sophomore in "High School Musical 3," the movie "has the potential to launch Martin into the ‘tween stratosphere."  Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and Corbin Bleu are moving on after "HSM3" and the stage is set for the next generation.  Along with his fellow new sophomores, Matt Prokop and Jemma McKenzie-Brown, Justin could be ready to rule " High School 4."

USA TODAY profiled Justin and his “High School Musical 3: Senior Year”  castmates Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale.  Over 45 days (some that were 18 hours long!), the cast found different ways to relax and beat the rising Utah Heat.  Zac and Vanessa kept a large, inflatable kiddie pool outside their trailer, while Ashley  preferred air-conditioning and Wii’s “Guitar Hero.”  All cast members got deluxe accommodations at one of two Salt Lake City hotels.  While some liked the ritzy Grand America, Justin decided on the more laid back Little America. As co-star Monique Coleman says, “I prefer the Little America because I can have coffee in the lobby in my pajamas.”  And what could be better than that?

On the Set of High School Musical 3: Senior Year

For her Los Angeles Times’ feature article on “High School Musical 3: Senior Year,” writer Mary McNamara visited the set on a night shoot. Describing it as “a bit like summer camp, with a bunch of young actors running around in shorts and T-shirts,” McNamara interviewed  Zac  Efron , Corbin Bleu, Vanessa Hudgens, and director Kenny Ortega while they shot a complicated dance number.

The theater-bound third installment lays the groundwork for “at least the possibility of a High School Musical  4," with the introduction of new characters played Justin (‘Donny’), and Matt Prokup (‘Jimmie’) as two Chad devotees, and Jemma McKenzie-Brown as a Sharpay protégé named Tiara.
